Gear: DC's Travis Pastrana Collection

There's no more familiar name in motocross, or the action sports world for that matter, than that of Travis Pastrana. So, naturally people want to show their support for their favorite rider and thanks to DC Shoes, you can now deck yourself out head to toe with Pastrana's steeze. Released this month, the Travis Pastrana Collection features t-shirts, button up shirts, hoodies, hats, board shorts, slippers and of course, shoes.

WHAT IT IS:
Starting off as a little skate shoe company in 1993, DC now produces way more than just shoes and a number of those products can be found in the Travis Pastrana Collection. Being as Pastrana has ridden a Suzuki throughout his entire career, yellow is used as an accent color in most of the products including shirts, hats, and most noticeably the Travis Pastrana Alibi shoe. Pastrana's love for red and black flannel shirts also gave way for the Big Rig flannel shirt, which features a little 199 logo on the bottom left ... how cool is that?

WHY IT RULES:
DC is one of the most recognizable companies in action sports and Pastrana is one the most recognizable athletes in the game. Put those two together and you have some gear that will get you daps from any true fan of action sports. If you're sick of people not knowing that you're into motocross, the Travis Pastrana Collection will solve that devastating problem. Represent for the culture, yo.

WHERE TO FIND IT:
Any retailer that sells DC shoes and products should carry at least a few of the items, however it's pretty hit and miss depending on the theme of the store. In today's day and age, it's almost best to just order online directly from the source so you know you're getting the legit gear.

DC Europe unveils private skatepark

DC Shoes is taking a page out of The Berrics' book. In the urban, street skateboarding mecca of Barcelona, Spain, DC has built a private, indoor skatepark for its team riders to skate, train and film video clips in.

Like the popular skateboarding website, The Berrics, the DC Embassy will generate web content by filming team riders and visitors to the park and creating web clips from the footage. Already, new DC pro Wes Kremer has filmed footage at the spot and European legends Tom Penny and Javier Sarmiento have stopped by.

Ruben Garcia, DC's European Skate Category Manager and longtime unofficial Barcelona skate ambassador has been at the forefront of this project since its inception. "The DC Embassy is something that we have always dreamt of, a place where our skate team and friends can just have fun and do what we love to do" he tolld ESPN. "Since we saw Rob Dyrdek's 'Fantasy Factory' the first time, we knew that something needed to be done in Europe. This facility will provide pro skateboarders and upcoming names the opportunity to film parts and show them to the world through our website."

The Embassy facility is over 12,000 square feet with custom-built street obstacles designed to hone the skills of DC team riders. While many skateboard companies have training-facility-style skateparks in the U.S., this is the first major private facility of this scale in Europe. It's also the first skate-company owned facility in Europe with its own dedicated website for skate content.

DC Shoes Moto team going big in 2012

Last month's DC Ride Day at the DC Motocross Training Facility at Pala Raceway served as a reminder of just how deep the DC Shoe Co. Moto Team is these days, and a new edit out this week featuring footage from the event should have motocross fans everywhere looking forward to more in 2012.

Riders featured in the clip include X Games 17 double gold medalist Nate Adams, new distance jumping record holder Robbie Maddison, motocross legend Jeremy McGrath, rising groms Adam Cianciarulo, Tyler Bereman, and Carson Mumford, and nearly all of the DC Moto Team riders, including Josh Hill, Jeffery Herlings, Andre Villa, Jolene Van Vugt, Hunter Hewitt, Blake Wharton, Justin Hill, Jason Anderson, Chris Plouffe, Matt Moss, PJ Larsen, and Malcolm Stewart. The third annual event also featured a poker tournament to help raise money for Road 2 Recovery, a non-profit foundation that provides financial assistance and other support to AMA-licensed professional motocross and supercross racers in the event of career-ending injury.

Although it's now just over two weeks into January, 2012 has already been a big year for the DC Moto Team: Robbie Maddison launched into the New Year with his Red Bull New Year. No Limits jump over San Diego Harbor after setting a new distance world record during training. Nate Adams closed out 2011 with a "Biggest Steeze" award at the Riders Above Dirt R.A.D. Awards and is on the cover of TransWorld Motocross this month as FMXer of the Year. JDR Motorsports released Malcolm Stewart's new video "Dream Ride" on January 3. Trey Canard is off to a strong start on the 2012 AMA Supercross circuit, with a seventh place finish at Round 2 over the weekend in Phoenix, Arizona. And Travis Pastrana just dropped the first trailer for his forthcoming "Nitro Circus 3D Movie."

Not too shabby.

DC Shoes Launches Rediscover DC Campaign

DC Shoes, one of my favorite shoe lines, is kicking off 2012 the right way. The company is launching its Rediscover DC campaign and has added two pros -Mike Mo Capaldi and Nyjah Huston- to its roster.

Here's the deal re: the Rediscover DC campaign: It re-introduces the new DC skate team at its best. For the initial launch, DC created a video presenting the skate team, and for the first time in nearly a decade, DC will debut a photo of the entire skate team together including newest skaters, Mike Mo and Nyjah. The campaign aims to highlight the caliber of athletes that ride for DC and invites consumers to rediscover the fact that skateboarding is the driving force behind the DC brand! Skating and sneaks rule.

"DC has always been a skate company. Through ups and downs and growth, the core of what we do has always been skateboarding and this campaign is a reflection of that. We have the most amazing skate team in the industry and also in the history of the brand, and we are proud of that. Some of our skaters have been with us since the beginning. Some are new. Some have become legends. We have a team of athletes that ranges in talents, skills and ages, all of which are unbelievable. Always remembering where we came from and what we are about. That is Rediscover DC," said Anton Nistl, President of DC in a statement.

Now about the new duo: At 21 years of age, Mike Mo Capaldi has already proved to be one of the best street skaters in the game. Mike Mo joins the team and is sponsored head-to-toe by DC footwear and apparel.

"There's not many like Mike Mo. He's one of a kind. I mean on a skateboard I don't really need to explain much. He's probably the best skater I have ever skated with," said Mikey Taylor, DC pro and teammate.

And 17-year-old Nyjah Huston was a fan of DC long before his introduction to the team. Skating since he was 5-years-old, the youngest ever X Games competitor is known for skating the biggest stairs and rails with ease, and without hesitation. He joins the DC skate team with 3 X Games medals, and as the winner of the most consecutive Street Leagues and the overall 2011 winner. With only 12 years of skating under his belt, Nyjah Huston has already positioned himself as one of the greatest skaters of our time.

"The 2012 team roster is exciting. I am the biggest Nyjah fan and supporter. To me, not only do I have a lot of belief in who he is, but I believe he will end up going down in history as one of the greatest skateboarders of all time," said Rob Dyrdek, DC skater and teammate.

"DC is proud to welcome Mike Mo and Nyjah to the team. They are two of the most unbelievably talented skaters that we have ever seen. Mike Mo is one of the most innovative ledge skaters. He has a very casual approach to skateboarding, making stuff look just too easy.

"Nyjah skates amongst and against the skaters that inspired him, and already at seventeen years of age he is becoming one of those legends himself. The decision to bring Nyjah on was really solidified once we saw him together with the team. Nyjah Huston is the future of skateboarding, and the DC skate team has never been better," by Jeff Taylor, DC's Vice President of Marketing.

Mike Mo Capaldi and Nyjah Huston join a legendary roster of athletes on the DC skate team including Danny Way, Rob Dyrdek, Colin McKay, Steve Berra, Chris Cole, Josh Kalis, Mikey Taylor, Matt Miller, and Wes Kremer. Both Mike Mo and Nyjah will be making their first appearance as DC athletes skating at the Rediscover Oz tour in January 2012.

DC Announces the making of Gymkhana FOUR

DC and Ken Block are proud to announce that production has begun on another gymkhana video project titled, Gymkhana FOUR. Fans can expect all of the driving precision, speed, and tire smoke that Ken has become known for to be taken to a whole new level with his latest project, set to be released in late Summer 2011.

“The DC x Ken Block Gymkhana franchise of videos is the most successful viral video content ever produced from the action sports, footwear, and auto industry,” said Anton Nistl, DC’s President. “It’s with amazing content like this that DC extended its reach in the digital and social media realms, we’ve seen our Facebook page grow from one million followers last October, to an industry leading 5.6 million. With Ken and our in-house DC creative team working to produce the finished product, the new video will undoubtedly be the most successful video yet.”

The car that Ken used for this project is a brand new racecar that his Monster World Rally Team recently completed. A modified 2011 Ford Fiesta, the car (codenamed the H.F.H.V.) made its first debut to the public this past Saturday at the Gymkhana World Tour event at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, CA. It will be used again later this week when Ken competes at X Games 17 in two separate rally events, Rally Car Racing and RallyCross.

"I'm unbelievably stoked about how Gymkhana FOUR is going," said Ken. "I did it in a brand new racecar that we've just finished building and it's an absolute beast. Plus, the concept for this next chapter is on a completely new level. The locations we visited and action we documented are absolutely wild. Fans are going to be floored when they see the finished clip. I can say with full confidence that Gymkhana FOUR is going to be better than Gymkhana THREE. And that is saying a lot, because I thought I would never be able to outdo GYM3."

The car used for Gymkhana FOUR, named the H.F.H.V. (Hybrid Function Hoon Vehicle), is a 100% new car for Ken. It incorporates the word hybrid into its name based on it being a multi-discipline vehicle. With quick changes, it can be set up for three distinctly different driving modes: performing gymkhana, racing in RallyCross and racing in the U.S. Rally America series. Visually, fans will be able to tell which setup the car is in based upon wheel colors and styles. The color-coding is: white for gymkhana, green for RallyCross and black for Rally America. In addition to the visual cues, the H.F.H.V. also undergoes less visible, internal changes between setups, such as the radiator moving between the front and the rear of the car depending on the cooling needs of the mode it’s in, as well as each mode having its own individual suspension setups, engine programs, turbos, restrictors and more.

To accompany the all-new build, a new livery has been created that retains the drip element from Ken’s Gymkhana THREE car, but incorporates vertical pin stripes as well as a tonal repeat pattern from Ken’s 2011 Ford Fiesta RS WRC car. Block’s newest DC footwear and apparel, inspired by the updated car livery, will be featured in Gymkhana FOUR and become available to consumers when the video launches.

Since launching the first video, Gymkhana Practice in 2008 the franchise has expanded to include two other major videos, Gymkhana TWO and Gymkhana THREE, as well as a number of supporting clips. To date, the franchise of driving performance videos has been viewed more than 110 million times globally, making it a viral phenomenon. Recognized far beyond the action sports and auto industry, the videos have won numerous creative awards and made prestigious lists. Most recently, Gymkhana THREE made YouTube’s official list of the “Top 10- Videos of 2010” and Ad Age’s list of “Top Viral Videos of 2010.”

Chris Cole on DC Shoe Co.

The cat is out of the bag: two-time Thrasher magazine Skater of The Year Chris Cole is riding for DC Shoes. Prior to this move, Cole had a long run with Fallen Footwear. Cole rode for Fallen since that brand's inception. Fallen is the brainchild of Jamie Thomas, the pro skater that founded the Fallen brand as well as Zero skateboards [Cole's board sponsor] and Black box distribution. Thomas and Cole have been friends and teammates for years. I spoke with Cole on the eve of the team change announcement about his big decision and what it means for his future.

So just to hear it from the horse's mouth as it were, what's your new sponsor?
My new shoe sponsor is DC Shoes. I'm really psyched about it.

Are you riding for DC clothing as well?
Nope, just shoes. I have other things in mind as far as clothing goes.

Okay now that that's out of the way, this is something that's been in motion for some time. Can you tell me a little bit about how you got involved with DC? Who approached you or did you approach them?
It had been thrown out there a long time ago, but it wasn't the right time for me. The rumors were circulating a long time before I had even given it real consideration, honestly. There ended up being some changes in the employment lineup that I am really happy about, and I have talked at length about where I want to go with my shoe designs as well as where the overall direction of the brand is going. DC came from skateboarding and they are putting all of their efforts into the skateboarding side of the brand. What they can do to improve the function of a skateboarding shoe is a huge draw.

You had a long run with Fallen, since its beginning and you're obviously tight with Jamie Thomas. How did the decision to leave Fallen come about and was it a hard decision to make for you?
It was definitely a hard decision. It didn't happen over night and I definitely had a lot of pondering to do. Ha ha! Jamie and I talked about it from the moment it was brought up, until the moment it was settled. I never wanted to pull the rug from under Fallen's feet and I feel like I am leaving Fallen at a good time for Fallen as well as a good time for me. It's not easy to walk away from the company who I've been with during monumental moments in my career, and run by one of my best friends, but it is the right decision.

Does this decision affect your status on Zero skateboards at all?
Not at all. I'm more involved with Zero than I ever have been, and that will not change.

Are you filming a part for the upcoming "Cold War" video?
I'm trying to. I'm trying to conjure up tours whenever I can because the team is so damn fun, but its tough. I try to put a full part with every video that comes out, but that gets harder and harder regardless of what you have going on otherwise, but I am also not short on having other s**t going on. It will get done though and I hope people enjoy it.

You've got some friends over at DC for sure and judging from the hype videos, your new teammates seem really excited to have you as part of their squad. Of the entire team, who are you the most excited to travel and tour with and why?
That's a tough question, but I really appreciate what people have said so far. It means a lot to hear such awesome things from teammates, mangers, filmers, editors, and fans alike. So thanks! But touring ... I really do like everyone: Matt Miller is truly awesome. I've always been a fan of Nick Dompierre and obviously Josh Kalis. I don't know if Danny Way tours, but that would definitely elevate my skating. I don't know if Rob Dyrdek tours either, but it'd be a blast if he did.
Mike BlabacBeyond a shadow of a doubt, Chris Cole is riding for DC.

If you could have any former member of the DC team from any of its eras, who would you want back on the squad so you could have them as a teammate and why?
Stevie Williams. I'm a huge fan. Actually the whole DC Euro Tour squad would be incredible as well.

How soon will DC have a pro model shoe ready for you?
Fall of 2011 my first shoe drops. I'm really excited about it; it skates great, and looks cool.

Is there any DC video project in the works at the moment?
Not that I know of but I am always down to do web edits or any video project that might come up.

With a little time before the start of contest season and this new shoe news out of the bag, what's next for you in 2011?
There are a lot of really cool things going on that will be talked about soon. I'd like to build a public skatepark, film as much as I can. Hopefully I can tour places I've never been and get to some places kids have been asking me to visit forever. I want to see them as much as they want to see me, I think. No more children [Cole has two children at home] ... I haven't slept in days.

DC Shoes Founder Ken Block's Passion for Racing

Ken Block may have founded the skate and action-sports brand DC Shoes, but these days he’s not behind a desk — he’s behind the wheel.

Block, 44, is the chief brand officer for Huntington Beach, Calif.-based DC Shoes, the company he started in 1993 with friend Damon Way. Responsible since the early days for promoting DC, today Block continues to build the brand and make a name for it. And that mission is increasingly tied to his passion for professional rally driving and the jaw-dropping stunt-driving technique called gymkhana that he’s almost singlehandedly elevated into a phenomenon.

A lifelong “car guy” and motorsports fan, Block told Footwear News that pursuing his interests was nothing more than a passing fancy until 2004, when DC Shoes sold to action-sports brand Quiksilver for $87 million.

“I had a little extra time and money, so I thought I’d go out and learn how to drive a rally car,” he said.

But Block quickly progressed past the beginner stage in the sport, which features drivers racing street-legal, but heavily modified, cars on point-to-point courses.

By 2005, Block was good enough to earn a spot on a professional team. He wasn’t sponsored and he paid his own way, but during the course of the year he racked up five top-five finishes and placed fourth overall in the Rally America national championship. He was so successful, in fact, that he was named Rally America’s Rookie of the Year and soon started fielding offers for sponsorship deals. Since then, Block has won multiple medals at the

X Games and garnered top-five finishes in races across the world. And his rally success paved the way for similar triumphs in a related sport that’s paid off big for DC.

While looking to polish his rally skills, Block discovered gymkhana, an autocross-esque sport that times drivers as they race across a predetermined obstacle course. The focus is on drifting, reversals and other precision driving skills.

“I was always looking for ways to get extra seat time,” Block said. “The more time you can get in, the better, and with rally being so expensive, I never got so much time between events.”

Block’s affinity for and skill in gymkhana has turned into big business — and major exposure — for DC Shoes. Block started recording his laps to look for ways to improve, but the videos soon gave him another idea about boosting online attention for DC.

In 2008, the brand launched the gymkhana series of videos, which feature Block’s stunt driving in an increasingly high-stakes — and high-concept — course. The culmination of the project came in August, when “Gymkhana IV: The Hollywood Megamerical” debuted online and started attracting attention. (The clip shot straight to the top of Advertising Age’s Viral Video list in its first week with more than 5 million views.) Hosted on DC’s YouTube channel and website — and giving lots of love to the brand’s logo and auto-specific shoes and apparel — the video now has more than 12.8 million views on YouTube alone, while the series as a whole has more than 93 million plays. That attention has paid off, Block said, in added sales for DC.

The series’ triumph, he explained, also has changed the way DC thinks about its marketing. With traditional print campaigns or television ads, Block said, “you don’t have direct feedback. You’re paying for placement. That’s how today’s age has really changed: If a footwear company puts its [ad] on YouTube, you can see a success rate, whether it’s working. It’s a huge paradigm shift — and an interesting one. You can see the success in the numbers.”

Going forward, Block, who admitted that the success of his rally career and the gymkhana series has meant cutting back on the time he spends directly overseeing DC, is working on the next edition of the videos.

“It’s a great formula. We’ll keep pushing the envelope on what works and doesn’t work, marketingwise,” he said. “We’ll expand and explore with the car and with marketing.”

DC Shoes Announces Additions to Its Skate Team: A Fan Looks Back

DC Shoes, Inc. started 2012 off right by delivering a tantalizing tidbit to skate fans. It came in the form of an announcement regarding new members being added to its venerable skate team and a promise of epic gnarliness to come. In honor of the announcement, here's a quick look at the history of DC Shoes and the newest members of its skate team:

street skater : Company History

DC Shoes, Inc. first burst onto the skate scene in 1994. Ken Block and Damon Way are the company's founders. For those unfamiliar with Damon Way, he is the brother of skate legend Danny Way. Block is a known snowboarder and World Rally Championship driver. The company was a natural offshoot of other skate apparel businesses the two men were involved in, namely Droors jeans, Dub outerwear and Eightball Clothing. By 2002, the company was racking in over $250 million in retail sales and attracting the attention of multiple suitors and counterfeiters. In the spring of 2004 it was acquired by surf and skate apparel manufacturer Quiksilver in a deal reputedly worth $87 million. The DC Shoes brand continues to enjoy success under the Quiksilver umbrella. In December 2011, Quiksilver, Inc. released its year end fiscal reports. It reported that its revenues for the year were a staggering $1.95 billion. The sales of DC Shoes products were undoubtedly included in that total.

Skate Team History

Original members of the DC Shoes Skate Team include pro skating icons Danny Way and Colin McKay. They were the first two pro skaters to produce signature shoes under the DC Shoes moniker. Unlike other skate companies, DC Shoes later rewarded the two men for their years of service in 2003 with equity stakes in the company. In my book, the fact that it supported its athletes in that way makes the company top notch. Since that time the DC Skate Team has grown exponentially in terms of star power. To date it features some of the hottest and legendary names in skateboarding. Among those on the team are Chris Cole, Rob Dyrdek, Steve Berra and Mikey Taylor.

Newest Skate Team Members

Nyjah Huston and Mike Mo Capaldi are the most recent athletes to join the DC Shoes Skate Team. Skate Fans may recall that Huston had a phenomenal 2011. Thanks to his incredible skating skills, he dominated much of the Street League Series. At one point during the summer, mention of his name in the skating world became as common as mentions of politicians visiting county fairs. The 21 year old Mike Mo has also captured his fair share of headlines over the years. He too participated in this year's Street League Series. He also made news in 2011 when his original sponsor me tape escaped from the DLX vault. Given all the talent within the DC Shoes stable, I am truly looking forward to seeing what the team will accomplish in 2012

DC Shoes Moto team going big in 2012

DC Shoes Partners with Supercross.com / Honda Racing Team

DC Shoes has signed on to support the new Supercross.com / Honda racing team owned by Jeremy McGrath and Larry Brooks. DC will be the official footwear and apparel sponsor of the team.

Owned and managed by Larry Brooks and Jeremy McGrath, the team made their first appearance at the Anaheim Supercross earlier this year. Both Brooks and McGrath bring a wealth of personal history and experience to the partnership and the new team. Brooks, a race team manager, has overseen many AMA Supercross Champions, including Jeremy McGrath himself. The legendary McGrath is arguably the most storied racer in AMA Supercross, and has won more Supercross races and championships than anyone in history. McGrath has had a long and successful relationship with DC Shoes, which made this an ideal partnership for both parties.

“We are excited to support Jeremy in his next venture in the motocross world. He has developed a stellar team and with great partners like Supercross.com and Larry Brooks, Andrew Short is primed for success,” said DC Director of Marketing, Brian Cassaro.

Jeremy McGrath, the 7-time AMA Supercross Series champion said, “I’ve been involved with DC for a number of years. They are a quality company, with quality people, and make great products. I’ve made it a point in my career to only work with companies and products that I truly believe in. DC makes products that people of all ages would enjoy.”

“DC is a brand that we are excited to have associated with our team. Many people worldwide know that DC makes great stuff, but our goal is to help expand the brand even further with our new race team. I couldn’t be happier to have a brand like DC associated with our race team,” said Larry Brooks, Race Team Manager and Co-owner.

Supercross.com has also brought on Angry Bikes as the associate sponsor of the team. Angrybikes.com features a brand new arcade style motocross game created for the Iphone. Just in time for Supercross season, the game launched on January 19th and is available now for download in the App store.

“Bringing DC and the Supercross.com / Honda race team together is a perfect union. Supercross.com aims to be the best in its field, exactly as DC has done. DC is known worldwide for being ‘the best.’The Supercross.com / Honda race team has that same goal – to be the best, and couldn’t do it without the help and support of DC,” said Matt Cook, new owner of Supercross.com.

In addition to being the title sponsor of the racing team, will also serve as the key platform for launching all Honda Racing Team related news and information. See the DC supported Supercross.com / Honda race team at upcoming AMA Supercross and Motocross events thru early September
